The City of Amsterdam is leading the development of the NATURE CDR Project, funded under the EU-LIFE-2025 programme and running from 2026 to 2031. The project establishes a circular model for biochar-based carbon dioxide removal, producing high-quality Nature CDR Credits with nature-positive premiums to strengthen the municipality's financial household for nature restoration, biodiversity and climate action.
Within this framework, nextlearning contributes to three connected work packages. Together with the City of Amsterdam, we help develop the digital product passport and life-cycle assessment methodology that trace each biochar batch from feedstock through production, application and lifecycle. We contribute to the drafting of an Ethics Code of Conduct for Nature CDR credits, addressing performance risk, revenue governance and buyer due diligence, and support the set-up of a public-civil partnership for verification and accountability.
In addition, together with IDAEA and city partners in Berlin and Barcelona, we help lead the feasibility studies for replicating the model, including the design and facilitation of hackathons to test locally adapted configurations of infrastructure, contracts and governance.
As part of the consortium, we help translate a technically mature carbon removal pathway into a system that municipalities can trust, govern and apply.
